If you want a dog friendly beach in Pensacola, the answer is specific: on Pensacola Beach, dogs are welcome in two designated dog beach parks, and nowhere else on the island. Navarre Beach does not allow dogs on the sand or the pier, and the Gulf Islands National Seashore keeps pets off its beaches. Knowing that before you pack the cooler saves you a citation and a long walk back to the car.
Everything below comes from the official pages, as posted in October 2026. Hours and rules can change, so check the linked page before you go.
What are the dog rules at Pensacola Beach?
The Santa Rosa Island Authority, which manages Pensacola Beach, puts it plainly: dogs are welcomed at designated dog beaches only, and all other beaches and parks on the island are off limits, including Casino Beach. Escambia County adds that violations are cited by Escambia County Animal Control officers.
The two dog beach parks:
| Location | How to find it (Escambia County) | Walkover |
|---|---|---|
| West dog beach | Lot B, first parking lot past the last Gulf side condominiums | 21E |
| East dog beach | Lot E, first parking lot past Portofino Island Resort | 28B |
Hours posted by the county: 7 a.m. to sunset from May 1 to Oct. 31, and sunrise to sunset from Nov. 1 to April 30. The later summer start lines up with what the island authority calls turtle season.
The rules from the island authority and the county:
- Dogs must be on a leash at all times.
- A current rabies tag must be visible; the island authority notes this is a State of Florida requirement, and the county asks for proper tags on every dog.
- Owners must pick up and properly dispose of dog waste.
- A dog left unattended in a vehicle can lead to criminal charges for the owner.
The island authority says doggie bags, disposable bins and wipes are provided at both locations. Bring your own anyway.
Is Pensacola Beach dog friendly?
Partly. It is one of the few spots in the area where you can legally walk your dog onto Gulf sand, but only inside those two parks. Casino Beach, the public beach parks and the stretch in front of your condo are not options. If you are staying on the island with a dog, plan your beach time around the dog parks and let the rest of the family split up for a while.
Navarre Beach
The official Navarre Beach tourism site, run by Santa Rosa County, says dogs are not allowed on the beach or the pier. It points dog owners to the Navarre Central Bark Dog Park, the Shoreline Park Dog Park and the Blackwater Heritage State Trail instead. For more inland options, see our roundup of dog parks in Pensacola.
Gulf Islands National Seashore
The National Park Service manages Gulf Islands National Seashore, including the Perdido Key area where Johnson Beach is. Its pet rules for the park:
- Pets are not allowed on any park beach, Gulf side or bay side.
- Pets are not allowed in the forts, facilities or historic structures.
- Pets are welcome on trails, multi use paths and park roads.
- Leashes can be no longer than six feet, pets must be attended, and owners must clean up after them.
The Park Service page for the Perdido Key area says it simply: no pets allowed on the beach.
Why the beach rules are strict about waste
A beach is a tough place for dog waste. CDC guidance says dog and cat hookworm larvae infect people through bare skin on soil or sand contaminated by animal feces, and that these hookworms are found in tropical or subtropical climates, especially where there are beaches. That is why every dog beach rule includes cleanup, and why it is worth carrying more bags than you think you need. For the details, read about hookworms and roundworms in your yard.
Quick checklist for a beach trip with your dog:
- Confirm you are headed to one of the two designated dog beach parks.
- Pack a leash, water, a bowl and plenty of bags.
- Check that the rabies tag is on the collar.
- Rinse sand off paws before the car.
